What's covered
All three plans, including the Kitchen Plus plan, cover your water heater. That includes gas, electric and tankless units, and the parts that most commonly fail: heating elements, thermostats, gas valves, thermocouples, pressure relief valves and the tank itself.
If the unit can be repaired, a licensed plumber repairs it. If the tank has failed, the plan covers replacement up to the coverage limit. You pay one flat service fee.
Why water heaters fail
The average tank water heater lasts 8 to 12 years. Sediment builds up inside the tank, the anode rod wears away, and eventually the tank corrodes through. In areas with hard water it can happen faster. If your water heater is more than eight years old, you're in the failure window.
Warning signs include rusty hot water, rumbling or popping sounds, moisture around the base, and hot water that runs out faster than it used to.
